Hey all ^^
If you're visiting this blog for the first time, you're either:
(a) a committee member
(b) a random person who stumbled upon MoMU while Googling something totally irrelevant like Machinewashing our Muddy Underwear
(c) a Malaysian studying at Melbourne University who is hopefully interested in getting involved with the club
Now, if you're (a), you probably don't need to read on because you already know. If you're (b), I suggest a good stain remover like Vanish 2-in-1. If you're (c), proceed to the next paragraph, because you are valuable to us and we would LOVE to actually see you in person at our next gathering :D
This is the webpage of MoMU, the new Melbourne Uni Malaysian club. I suppose most of you will be aware, unless you're first years, that Malaysians were previously represented on campus by a club called the Malaysian Cultural Society (MCS). What happened to that club, you may ask, and why is there a need for a new one?
*sigh*
Without going into too much detail, basically, last year's MCS committee were sloppy, haphazard and careless. They graduated without a care as to the continuity of the club, and so, we were unable to provide certain documents to the Clubs & Societies office which permitted the new committee to step up. Since there is no hope in hell of us getting these documents back anytime in this lifetime, there was no choice for us but to wrap up MCS and start a new club with a new name. Hopefully with this, we'll be able to wipe the slate clean and serve Malaysians better than the old club did. Um, oops...I'm not supposed to be badmouthing the old committee, hor. But screw it! It's my blog and I'll rant if I want to!
Err back to the topic...right now, we've already submitted a new club application to Clubs & Societies and are awaiting approval of MoMU as an official Melbourne Uni club. *fingers crossed* They've told us this might take quite a while, one month AT LEAST *gulp*
What this means is that in the meantime, we're unable to get funding from the Student Union at all. Which means our bank balance is ZERO. Which means all the activities we hold, initially, will have to focus on fund-raising.
It kinda sucks that it has to be this way because the last thing we want is to charge you guys for participating in the club, but, if we don't have any money, it'll be impossible for us to organize further things in the future. And omg, renting venues and stuff is totally not cheap. You would not believe how bureaucratic everything is! For example, if you wanted to book a room in the Union House after hours or during holidays, you would have to actually pay for a security guard to be present so that we don't trash the place. I mean come on! Malaysians are like, angelic, dude. Give us a break. And it's not just the Union House, if we wanted to book a karaoke lounge or something for club use, the cost would probably be around 1000 bucks or more. So y'see, fund raising and obtaining sponsors are going to be the main goals of the club for quite a while.
Which brings me to the reason we established this blog. In previous years, we've had problems actually getting Malaysians to take part in our activities, which sometimes results in huge losses, or even a cancellation of the event, which is really bad for our image and a huge letdown to the people who did express interest in the first place. So as part of the new strategy for MoMU, I intend for this blog to be one of the main channels of communication between us and our members. Everything we do, the costs, the trouble we have getting money or sponsors or venues, the processes we go through to make things happen, will be laid bare here for you guys to see. Hopefully, this will make the process of running a club a bit more transparent and therefore interest you guys a bit more in the stuff we do. Even if you're not interested in getting involved, think of this blog as a bit of entertainment while you're surfing the net. This blog does not just serve a practical purpose, we want you guys to enjoy reading it too. Btw, it's not always gonna be as formal as this post, I just have to formalize it a bit cos yunno, it's the first post and all and we had a lot of serious stuff to get through (I did a nice informal draft at first, and August told me it was lame. Stupid August. :P).
Migod, this is getting too long. Should stop boring you guys about now. Oh wait! Before I end this! I'm Melissa, supposedly the new president of the old MCS and therefore kind of like the new president for MoMU. Well, not really, because MoMU hasn't had its elections yet, we can only have them after we're approved by the Union =_=" So basically I'm just leading the interim committee through till the official elections, by then which I might not be president anymore? Depending whether I'm re-elected :P So yup, that's me, come harass me in Uni if you know who I am and wanna
transfer all the money in your bank account to me chat about club-related stuff. I won't bite, I promise! ^^
Tata for now and come back soon ya! Cos we WILL update regularly (I shall force other people to do it for me if I'm lazy. Mwahaha.)
