Commonwealth Games

Sunday, March 26, 2006

Hi guys! How you guys enjoying the extremely SIZZLING HOT weekend? I know I'm drooling over how hot Summer is melting here in my little room.

Oh! Before I go on, let me just promote myself...
Name : Chau Siang, Ng (Erwin)
Age : 20
Course : Commerce 2nd year (majoring Accounting)
Status : Young and available *no one saw what I wrote!! ;p *

What am I doing here? I am gonna be the treasurer for M.o.M.U. and am gonna try help M.o.M.U. grow into a successful society where Malaysians can enjoy each others company (especially in the nights when you feel like mamak-ing but can't cause there are none around so you end up in someone's place cooking indomie and then chatting over the oh-so-delicious indomie you guys cooked with all your sweat and blood).

Alright! Enough bout me.. On to what I wanted to write about.. THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES!
Yes, recently Melbourne held the Commonwealth Games and we(Students in Australia, namely those in Melbourne) are privileged to experience first hand the Opening ceremony, tournaments and very soon tonight the Closing ceremony. It was just unfortunate that we did not get a break over the Commonwealth Games LOL!

Anyway, I would very much like to congratulate our Malaysian athletes who trained so hard to enter the Commonwealth Games and played their best.

!! C-O-N-G-R-A-T-U-L-A-T-I-O-N-S !!

Have you seen the Commonwealth Games medal? It's pretty isn't it? Well, if you have not seen it, feast your eyes on it!!

This by the way is one of the Malaysian lawnbowlers' gold medal! Yes, Mel's brother, Mel and I were lucky enough to have got pictures with them as they were sipping chocolate outside Max Brenners in QV. Amazing isn't it?

I'm just so proud to be a Malaysian.
Being Malaysian is not just about being born in Malaysia. It is also the joy you feel when Malaysia built at one point in time the tallest building in the world, has the world's biggest(though probably smelliest) flower in the world and the many more achievements Malaysia has attained over the years. It is about the times you think about how different Australia(or any other country in the world) is from Malaysia - and then miss those differences.

Which is why in every part of the world, where there is a university, there should be a Malaysian Society - M.o.M.U. representing Malayians of Melbourne University. It is so that we can meet up and miss those differences together. So, do not be afraid to ask us anything and do join our club when we become official. Hope to see you guys soon(Don't forget Night Market!! We'll be getting ourselves a stall!!)

Night Market Meetings Galore

Thursday, March 23, 2006

I tell you, if you Malaysians don't come BUY US OUT during Night Market, I will descend into a murderous rage scream, cry and roll around on the floor like a baby be very upset.

Because of all the Night Market meetings, my nights are virtually momu, momu and more momu and that's why I've been sleeping so late and pontenging all my morning classes! See how dedicated we are?? :P

PLUS right now I am neglecting preparing for my debate/various tutes tomorrow to BLOG. So uhhh...buy me Tim Tams! Because my brother ate all of mine before I even had a chance to try one. *bitch slaps*

Sooo basically, we have come up with the brilliant idea of having a...hmm...I dunno if I should reveal it just yet...let's just say we won't be your typical Malaysians selling nasi lemak and chicken curry type stall. We're more specialized. In a verrry specific type of food (are all the italics making you curious yet? :P) Which we will be selling many variations of. And because I am a management student, we are going to be modelled on a fast-food chain sorta menu, with different meal sets. Well, it actually has nothing to do with me majoring in management, but uhm, that shall be the interesting fact for today :D

August (the oh-so-kawaii vice secretary >:D) and Cliffton (our newly-appointed IT Officer) did us the favour of being our Indian mamak men for today and cooked up samples for the committee to try before actually attempting to sell them. This is all that was left:

Empty tupperware! That's how good it was...which means you guys sooo have to try what MoMU is cookin! Reservations, anyone??? (I can see August and Cliff's heads getting bigger and bigger. During NM I'm gonna make them wear flowery aprons. Just for the heck of it. Har har :P)

We're also gonna be selling teh tarik. This one can tell la, because after all, what are Malaysians without their teh tarik. And one other type of drink, rambutan/lychee ice blendeds. As an additional bonus because we all love free stuff, the first 50 people to purchase our mystery food item :P will receive a free can of Pepsi or Solo! Keng anot? We are so generous it brings tears to my eyes *sniff*

Committee members busily discussing our NM plans:

Woah, all so rajin, listening to me like I'm Queen Elizabeth. Shuddup,I know I look weird. Credit to James, our talented photographer :P

And here we have a more artistic, tilted view. We are still berborak-ing. 1 and a half hours long wei, this meeting. Just to discuss what to sell. Why Malaysia got so much food wan?

At the moment, the stall application forms for NM are still with me...errr heh heh. Have to fill them out and pass them back to MUOSS by Friday. Hopefully can fill them out tonight and hand in tomorrow, but seeing as how i still have a debate to prepare for and readings to wade through and work to do for tute tomorrow...hmmm. It's already 1.47 am :( Hopefully we'll get approved because MUOSS isn't letting us have stalls based on first-come-first-serve anymore, now they're waiting for all the applications to come in, then choosing who deserves a stall based on food variety and such. Of course, we'll let you guys know if we're approved (and if we're not, heads will roll :P).

Oh I'm August btw... please spread the word about MoMU!

P/S : how cute is "momumomu" lol

Hey all ^^

If you're visiting this blog for the first time, you're either:
(a) a committee member
(b) a random person who stumbled upon MoMU while Googling something totally irrelevant like Machinewashing our Muddy Underwear
(c) a Malaysian studying at Melbourne University who is hopefully interested in getting involved with the club

Now, if you're (a), you probably don't need to read on because you already know. If you're (b), I suggest a good stain remover like Vanish 2-in-1. If you're (c), proceed to the next paragraph, because you are valuable to us and we would LOVE to actually see you in person at our next gathering :D

This is the webpage of MoMU, the new Melbourne Uni Malaysian club. I suppose most of you will be aware, unless you're first years, that Malaysians were previously represented on campus by a club called the Malaysian Cultural Society (MCS). What happened to that club, you may ask, and why is there a need for a new one?

*sigh*

Without going into too much detail, basically, last year's MCS committee were sloppy, haphazard and careless. They graduated without a care as to the continuity of the club, and so, we were unable to provide certain documents to the Clubs & Societies office which permitted the new committee to step up. Since there is no hope in hell of us getting these documents back anytime in this lifetime, there was no choice for us but to wrap up MCS and start a new club with a new name. Hopefully with this, we'll be able to wipe the slate clean and serve Malaysians better than the old club did. Um, oops...I'm not supposed to be badmouthing the old committee, hor. But screw it! It's my blog and I'll rant if I want to!

Err back to the topic...right now, we've already submitted a new club application to Clubs & Societies and are awaiting approval of MoMU as an official Melbourne Uni club. *fingers crossed* They've told us this might take quite a while, one month AT LEAST *gulp*

What this means is that in the meantime, we're unable to get funding from the Student Union at all. Which means our bank balance is ZERO. Which means all the activities we hold, initially, will have to focus on fund-raising.

It kinda sucks that it has to be this way because the last thing we want is to charge you guys for participating in the club, but, if we don't have any money, it'll be impossible for us to organize further things in the future. And omg, renting venues and stuff is totally not cheap. You would not believe how bureaucratic everything is! For example, if you wanted to book a room in the Union House after hours or during holidays, you would have to actually pay for a security guard to be present so that we don't trash the place. I mean come on! Malaysians are like, angelic, dude. Give us a break. And it's not just the Union House, if we wanted to book a karaoke lounge or something for club use, the cost would probably be around 1000 bucks or more. So y'see, fund raising and obtaining sponsors are going to be the main goals of the club for quite a while.

Which brings me to the reason we established this blog. In previous years, we've had problems actually getting Malaysians to take part in our activities, which sometimes results in huge losses, or even a cancellation of the event, which is really bad for our image and a huge letdown to the people who did express interest in the first place. So as part of the new strategy for MoMU, I intend for this blog to be one of the main channels of communication between us and our members. Everything we do, the costs, the trouble we have getting money or sponsors or venues, the processes we go through to make things happen, will be laid bare here for you guys to see. Hopefully, this will make the process of running a club a bit more transparent and therefore interest you guys a bit more in the stuff we do. Even if you're not interested in getting involved, think of this blog as a bit of entertainment while you're surfing the net. This blog does not just serve a practical purpose, we want you guys to enjoy reading it too. Btw, it's not always gonna be as formal as this post, I just have to formalize it a bit cos yunno, it's the first post and all and we had a lot of serious stuff to get through (I did a nice informal draft at first, and August told me it was lame. Stupid August. :P).

Migod, this is getting too long. Should stop boring you guys about now. Oh wait! Before I end this! I'm Melissa, supposedly the new president of the old MCS and therefore kind of like the new president for MoMU. Well, not really, because MoMU hasn't had its elections yet, we can only have them after we're approved by the Union =_=" So basically I'm just leading the interim committee through till the official elections, by then which I might not be president anymore? Depending whether I'm re-elected :P So yup, that's me, come harass me in Uni if you know who I am and wanna
transfer all the money in your bank account to me chat about club-related stuff. I won't bite, I promise! ^^

Tata for now and come back soon ya! Cos we WILL update regularly (I shall force other people to do it for me if I'm lazy. Mwahaha.)
