Malaysia Accent Lesson 4 - The Mamak Culture

Wednesday, August 30, 2006

Apa khabar kawan-kawan? (How's it going my friends?)

I know I know.. It has been awhile since I have posted as Pakcik Win but things has been rather hectic these past weeks.

Anyway, it will be August 31 tomorrow - Happy Merdeka!! Pst pst.. There is a Merdeka celebration on this 31st August at Velvet Informer, 189 Lonsdale Street. Entrance is only $4 / $6!!

So, what should we learn today?

Today I feel that we should learn something different from the usual.

So, what can I lecture you guys about? Any ideas adik-adik? Now, let's see.. We have learnt the ever famous 'lah', the wonderful 'ar' and the always used 'eh'.

YES! I thought of it.. It shall be all about the mamak culture!

What is mamak?

Mamak is basically eating and mamak-ing is when you are having a light meal with your friends as you talk about the ongoings in your life.

Usually, people goes mamak-ing in the night at the nearest store in the neighbourhood. Some popular places in KL is Nirwana @ Bangsar, Devi's Corner @ every freaking suburb, Kayu @ Chow Yang and Steven's Corner @ also every freaking suburb!

Mind you, the AUD:MYR currency is 3:1. So, Malaysian food is extremely extremely cheap!!

Drinks typically ordered are teh tarik(which was sold cheaply in our FoN stall!), iced milo or ice lemon tea.

These drinks are usually served with Malaysian Mamak food!! Usually it would be nasi lemak, roti canai, roti bom and many MANY more varieties!

I shall not tempt you with pictures because I know that you would kill me if I did.. And also there is a video for you all to watch! A very very good YouTube video all about Mamak! Enjoy the video!!

Mamak: A Malaysian Culture

Gosh, I miss going to the Mamak!! Can't wait till the holidays end of this year! Mamak oh mamak~~

Yours truly,
Pakcik Win

by Blogger ChilliBike, at 12:04 am
  • "umm.. usually it's not so orderly.. hahah.. plenty of jostling and talking over each other..

"If you're quick, you shall presevere~" That's the motto.

But yea, I guess in this sense, the closest person has the advantage :P"

by Blogger patienthelen^, at 12:17 am
  • "Haha!! That part is so not true for my friends and I. Why? Mainly because the person taking orders are brilliant!! They are able to remember what food and drinks you ordered even if you came in a group of ten!! And not to forget, they usually do not have any book or pen to write down your orders.. It's all by memory! How amazing is that??"

If I am not mistaken, that means mamak stall ;p"

MoMU IGM and Elections

Thursday, August 24, 2006

Hi people,

Our constitution has finally been approved by the student union, which means that we will be going ahead with our IGM (Inaugural General Meeting) and official elections - and be well on our way to affiliation with the student union (UMSU)

Go read more about it here!!

Why?

Because me, Chong Chyn, Winnypoo, Suvs, and Cliffe spent our *whole* Sunday printing tickets, posters and God knows what else because it took us at something like 5 hours just to get them darn things printed.

I damn tak puas. Ticket, during event will be torn (the stubs mah). Posters, after event will throw. *grumbles* Spend my whole Sunday printing like siao then later kena buang. :(

Designing, designing. Design like mad to meet deadline, then come print shop must still align pulak.

Our little babies popping out of the oven! Ok ok I know it's a printer. Shaddup. I'm emo.

This is the size of our posters this year. Cute anot? I decided to go with a kawaii mini theme. Cos it's my club and I'll do what I want!

Kidding :P Our posters are normal size, but definitely not normal design. Kudos to Siew Joo for the brilliant poster + her time and effort.

Tadahhhh! Beautiful, classy, cannot-get-anywhere-else-but-from-MoMU-table Ball tickets! On expensive glossy cardboard some more ohkay, it doesn't get anymore atas than this.

Being a Med student, Chong Chyn did not feel complete without a sharp cutting instrument of some sort.

Before I hit the sack, one last pic:

The final version of our ball ticket, cut ever-so-perfectly by Kheng of Scott's copy shop. Special thanks must go to the guy, who fielded every complaint from our mafan committee with nothing but smiles and "No problem no problem". And, who stayed a whole *hour* past closing time to help us with the printing of the ball tickets, which took yonkers. And to Scott's, for the great printing rates!

So near to uni, on Bouverie only, go lah, print and copy all your stuff there la, exercise a bit and stop getting ripped off by the library copiers and the annoying ugly UniCard!

Anyhoots, gotta go. In conclusion, we put a lot of work into Merdeka Night and Ball (which we could've put into going to class). So....come lahhhhh.

  • "wa! those designs are really PROFESSIONAL!!!

makes it worth going just to get one of them ;p

and yeah, Scott's great... have you ever chatted with the owner? haha, he's really funny, and he'll tell you all these stories from when he was in UK..."

by Blogger ChilliBike, at 5:46 pm
  • "Wow, u guys really did a super great job!!! Add oil!!!"

by Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:22 pm
  • "Ya!! It was a tough job man.. We were there for so damn long I almost fainted cause I was freaking hungry!!

Lucky Cliff was there.. He did the editing while everyone else did the printing and the cutting.. And editing took up 3/4 of the time we were there.. And if no one else came, who knows when we would have got the tickets all nicely cut. :P

Great job everyone!! Oh that includes me ;p and also the designers (aka Siew Joo & Erin) !"

by Blogger Purring Tiger, at 10:06 pm
  • "Thanks guys for coming to our shop for these tickets and posters. Well, I want to introduce my colleague- VincenT. He was the guy who cut your tickets!! He is certainly more than happy to help with any design and printig jobs in the future!!

    Scott's ROCKS!!"

Scandalous

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060809/ap_en_mu/pussycat_dolls

They might as well scour the shopping malls and fine all the "scantily-dressed" girls who are "flouting decency regulations".

  • "Actually ah, if you read the review of the concert itself and see the pictures of the concert itself here: http://www.mtvasia.com/Review/Event/
E20060731001447.html, you can sort of understand why they actually fined them. Not that I'm saying that the government isn't a bit kolot, but they HAVE already "warned Western artistes not to be too "raunchy" so as not to offend local sensitivities when performing in Malaysia." I think the organisers should respect that, even though the government should be more open minded, but there is a limit to everything, and its all part of finding a 'balance' between the 2 parties so that we get a good outcome for all."

by Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:07 pm
  • "Well PCD is afterall a well known burlesque dance group who happen to have one singer and a couple of hit songs (not to mention a few raunchy music vids). If they wanted to do something, they should've NOT let PCD perform in the first place. I agree that it is difficult to strike a balance in any other case but I'm pretty sure the people who bought tix to the concert know exactly what to expect from them and will not be offended in any way - quite the opposite hehe."

  • "Honestly, when I first read about it, I felt the very same as miszmilk.

Then, the comment posted by crushedguava changed my views slightly..

Then when I saw the pictures at mtvasia, I truly understand why they got fined. As crushedguava said, there should be a balance..

If Mariah Carey could change her wardrobe, why not the Pussy Cat Dolls? :P"

by Blogger Purring Tiger, at 12:00 am
  • "Pussycat Dolls made a name for themselves doing exactly this. M'sia should've known what to expect. And anyway, I've seen TONS of girls in M'sian nightclubs wearing waaaaaaaay less than that, both Malay and non-Malay. Hm, and in the Rainforest festival too."

Wow! We pulled it off didn't we? I hope everyone really did have a great time because we sure did =)

Thank you for coming and showing your support for our newly founded club. If our future events turn out anything like this one, I can only see the club growing from strength to strength in the coming years. I hope this event is an indication of great things to come!

As the coordinator, I gotta admit I was hopeless at times =P I have never organised any event of this magnitude before hehe but somehow everything fell into place. Ask the committee members how crap I was at planning this event! -distributing jobs, calculating the budget etc. LOL (Quick apology to anyone who was appalled at my budget estimating skills during the meeting hehe thats what happens when there are no commerce students to do it! Paiseh paiseh)

I would like to thank my superb bbq subcommittee: Su Ann (the evil genius who planned the swing swing), Chong Chyn, James and Jerome. And all the other committee members who worked tirelessly to ensure the event went as smoothly as possible. Also, I would like to thank volunteers Cheng Min and Jing Harn who woke up early to help us prepare the kaya sandwiches, Adelyn and Xue Fang who helped us prepare the salad and also to two baik hati girls, Amanda and Mun Leng who helped out at the bbq pit! Thanks!

Congratulations to Iris who won the human bingo challenge, Group 5 who won the swing swing challenge and to lucky Kelvin who won the raffle for the double movie pass to Hoyts!

At the end, a skirmish broke out involving barbeque sauce and tomato sauce, and as they say a picture is worth a thousand words:

sauce wars
