Malaysia Accent Lesson 2 - "ar"

Saturday, April 22, 2006

HEY HEY!! How are your holidays?? Well, mine was great! Had some paintball bullets shot at me and also had some sunshine warming me up (while you guys were in your beds hoping that your blankets would keep you warm). *Evil laugh* I’m kidding!! I hope you guys had an amazing holiday as well! Even if it were just staying in bed all day long, you definitely would have got your beauty sleep which you were deprived of before the break.

I know that it has been awhile since “Malaysia Accent 1” but fear not for Pakcik Win is here! Now then, for this lesson, we shall learn how to use another commonly used expression – “ar”. Now then, the suffix “ar” is apparently derived from the Chinese expression “a”.

Well, “ar” is usually used at the end of a question.
eg. “Who is that ar?” “What is that ar?” “When is it ar?” “Where is that ar?” “How is that possible ar?” “Really ar?” “You sure ar?”

Of course, there are other ways to using “ar” and not constricted to short short questions as above.
eg. “What do you think of my new handphone ar?”
or even “Is that girl pretty ar?”
or even “Melbourne University got flooded ar?”

Then again, “ar” can also be used when it is NOT a question! Usually in situations where you are giving someone a warning you would use “ar” at the end of the sentence or when there is a pause in the middle of the sentence.
eg. “Don’t come near me ar! I’m warning you! If you come near me ar, I will.. I will.. I will throw this pot of cold water at you then you will freeze to death!”

Not to forget, “ar” can also be used to refer to someone or something, well, anything! Of course, as I said above, it has to be when there is a pause in the middle of the sentence.
eg. “My sister ar, she sucks! Stealing my bras all the time!”
or “That dog ar, it almost was knocked down by that fat boy riding the bicycle”
or even “The tallest building in the world ar, it almost fell on me! Luckily ar, I can run like The Flash!”

HAHA!! So how’s that for the second lesson of Malaysia Accent? Don’t forget to stay in tune for the Malaysia Accent 3!! But before that, time for some exercises!

Exercise 2
Answer 'True' or 'False' for the usage of the suffix 'ar' below.

a) “You remember that girl or not ar? Her name is Angeline Jolly!” *drools*
b) “I know that dog ar! The stripes.. It is Scooby's dog!” *scratches head*
c) “I hate my lecturer ar! He smells like cow dung all the time!!”
d) “I bought my car from him ar. It is still quite new although it is fifty eight years old.”
e) “That boy ar, he reminds me so much of Bread Pit! So handsome!!” *drools a second time*

Gosh, that was tough!! Not the exercise! But choosing the questions! Why? That’s because almost every sentence could be inserted with “ar”!! Don’t believe me?

From Exercise 1
a) "Hey, I know you ar?”
b) "That book is mine ar. You better give it back!"
c) "Oh my goodnes! You won the bid on ebay for that bag you wanted ar?"
d) "My phone spoilt ar? Why I cannot call out ar?"
e) "That fella ar! He banged into me and I dropped my phone. $%^&*Curse cursE)(&^%@"

Just changing the suffix “lah” to “ar” and changing some words and expressions, the sentence still makes sense but the meaning changes!!

Anyway, not to forget, the answers to Exercise 1 is as below.
a) False, “lah” in this case should not be used as a question. It should have been - "Hey, I know you lah! I used to come over to your place for dinner!" *winks*
b) True
c) False, “lah” is just not appropriate at all times!! - "Oh my goodness! You won the bid on ebay for that bag you wanted!"
d) True
e) True

  • "and don't forget, you can even use 'ar' entirely on it's own

    e.g:

    A: ar?
    B: ar what?
    A: ar lah!
    B: =_=|||"

Interesting to note that the same person- "Malaysian person" drooled over both Bread Pitt and Angelina Jolly.

Says a lot about Malaysians and Bisexuality.

    Truly proud to be Malaysian.

  • "In the context of wh-clauses, 'ar' or 'ah' are arguably more appropriate suffixes than 'lah'. As mentioned in your previous post, 'lah' is frequently utilised as an added emphasis on the preceding object or adverb, or appended to the end of the sentence for the purpose of verbal drama-queen histrionics. However, exceptions apply, particularly in Bahasa Melayu, where, for instance, a frequently occuring example would be "Kenapalah?" or "Macam mana lah?" The adulteration of the English language in Malaysia with Malay influences somewhat justifies such utilisation of the 'lah' suffix. Even so, scholars of Bahasa Melayu themselves are said to be divided over the more appropriate use of the suffix, and it is highly recommended that one should peruse the latest edition of Tatabahasa Dewan for a resolution of this issue.

It may be interesting to note that the subtle phonetic quality between 'ah' (which arguably possesses the same meaning as 'ar'?) and 'lah' could have contributed to the mistaken assumption that the terms are interchangeable."

THANK YOU!!

Saturday, April 08, 2006

I'm sorry for not posting this earlier but a big thank you to everyone who supported our stall during the night market!! I would say that it was quite a success - both the event and our stall that is. You guys drained us of all our energy we just could not move the next day!
It was real fun - I was standing at the counter from start till end and did not managed to even take a walk around the night market - MISSING OUT ON ALL THE OH-SO-GOOD FOOD!!! T_T But, the constant orders of food and drinks kept me going :P
Once again I apologise to those who had to wait quite awhile for their food as we were not efficient (especially, in the start) considering it was our first time doing something like this. And I also apologise for not getting halal meat that some of you had to miss out on the Roti John which was sold out in the end. Yea! Our Roti John was SOLD OUT!
Also, we had to constantly prepare the best TEH TARIK in melbourne which was mainly tarik-ed by our secretary Su Vyn and also a volunteer and friend, Hazwan. They were really like the local mamak guy tarik-ing the teh!! *Will get pictures up soon*
We also were selling ice blended rambutan and longan for a short moment as shortly after, our ice blender failed to work!! To our amazement, it started working only after it was all over - to which we found out that the high tech blender had to have its lid shut to a click sound, which we did not do during night market. However, there were some who still wanted the rambutans/longans but without ice blended, so we gave them ice cubes! :P
Roti Kahwin (Kaya Toast) had mediocre response. LOL Nothing much to say about it except that people kept asking "WHY ROTI KAHWIN?". Err.. Ask August? LOL
And sambal.. .. .. .. .. .. .. *sighs* .. .. .. .. .. .. WHY NO ONE BUY SAMBAL?!? Don't you guys cook at home?!? You can actually serve sambal with your dishes and it was just $3 each!! Man, you guys just missed out on the best deal ever! I mean, how often do you get to eat homemade sambal?
Anyway, I would like to thank everyone once again for supporting us. And also thanks to everyone who worked so hard that night - the acting committee - Augustine, Cliffton, Eway, Ezien, James, Melissa, Su Vyn, Weng Wai and ME ME ME!! - the volunteers - Erin, Fendy, Hazwan and Su Ann. If I did miss anyone's names do email me - erwinng86@gmail.com - and I would put your name down. I was too busy handling the cash that I did not see who actually came to the back to help. ;p

THANK YOU !!

Malaysia Accent Lesson 1 - "lah"

Thursday, April 06, 2006

Hey guys, how ya doin? I'm guessing TERRIBLE! Cause that's how I'm feeling with an assignment due tomorrow (which I have not yet started on) and a test tomorrow (which I have not yet studied for)!! But just to get your minds off assignments and mid-semester exams, a FUN post for everyone!!

People of all ages, gender and sizes.. **Especially those of you who have not been in touch with your "Malaysian roots". Oh, especially especially those of you who are of a different nation and have tons of Malaysian friends around you all the time. And not to forget those who would just like to learn more about how Malaysians speak, which can be very interesting.** Come join me as I, Pakcik Win [Uncle Win(Win - short for Erwin *duh*)] , rattle on about the "Malaysia Accent".

So, starting with a very common expression Malaysia is famous for - "lah" (sometimes also pronounced as "la" or "lar") ! Now the origins of the suffix "lah" is unknown as most races in Malaysia do use lah frequently. Therefore, whether it originated from the local Malays or from the Chinese or even perhaps the Indians, we cannot be entirely certain.

So then how are we supposed to use "lah" ?

"lah" is usually used at the end of a sentence BUT NOT EVERY SINGLE SENTENCE (Which would only irritate every other Malaysian if you kept on repeating it.. Not to forget, you then fail miserably as trying to become Malaysian.. That time, I would say that "You are dumb! You are loser! (http://www.jokaroo.com/ecards/funny/areyoudumb.html)".

So then let me repeat myself, "lah" is to be used at the end of a sentence.
eg. "My laptop crashed lah."

Now, there are many context to using "lah" as well.
1) Begging
eg. "Please lah! I beg of you.. Let me go lah!!"
"Please give me one dollar lah!!"

2) Expressing anger
eg. "Don't lah! If you touch me once more I will kick your balls!"

3) Finger pointing
eg. "Not my fault lah!! You ask Lawrence lah!"

4) Explaining a situation
eg. "I called to say I love you lah. Why else would I call you for?"

Now, sometimes "lah" can also be used in the middle of the sentences (though rarely).
eg. "Don't lah like that. If you continue crying, I will not buy you lollipops!"
"What lah you?!? Why you never tell me you have an exam tomorrow?"

Well, that's it for now.. Hope you guys enjoyed your lesson. Pakcik Win signing out.

Oh yes, by the way, I have prepared some questions for you guys to practice. Do have a try! Till another time, enjoy yourself learning the Malaysian slang!

Exercise 1
Answer 'True' or 'False' for the usage of the suffix 'lah' below.

a) "Hey, I know you lah? I used to come over to your place for dinner!" *winks*
b) "That book is mine lah. Give it back!"
c) "Oh my goodness lah! You won the bid on ebay for that bag you wanted!"
d) "My phone spoilt lah.. That's why I could not give you a call."
e) "That fella lah! He banged into me and I dropped my phone. $%^&*Curse cursE)(&^%@"

Answers shall be posted in the second lesson of Malaysia Accent.

We have assignments due too :(

Tuesday, April 04, 2006

Sorry peepz for the lack in updates...midsems + assignments + lack of sleep = half-dead committee...but that doesn't mean we haven't been thinking about the club (man, I think some of us even dream about it. The only thing I dream about is August getting beaten up :P)

Meeting Report:

1. Had a committee meeting in my lovely mansion last Friday. It was supposed to be a potluck, but some no-skill lazy people cheated and brought pizza instead *frown* Then again, it's probably better than their cooking, so I think at the end of the day we can count ourselves blessed >:)

Your lovely hardworking committee thoughtfully mulling over big important things. Bonus! Something in that pic is an item that we're gonna be selling the the night market! Anyone care to guess which it is?

Some of the things we discussed were...uh...crap...*racks brain* oh! job delegation for Night Market. Yours Truly somehow got roped into being the emcee for the night (cover your ears, people, it ain't gonna be pretty. PLUS I have to wear a dress. And be shiveringly horribly cold. What colour should I wear? *bouncebounce*). No need to go into specifics, partly because I also can't remember who's doing what, but rest assured dear MoMU/ans/sans/lings/ians/etcetc that there will be enough people to cook your food and make your drinks and maybe even do a little joget for you if you ask nicely ;D

Secondy, decorations for our stall. I think we're calling it Gerai MoMU? But there's a deco competition and we could win $100 bucks if we have the best decorations, so we can't just leave it bare, even though that's what gerais are like! I tell you, it's damn annoying cos we spent pretty much 5 hours thinking of how to decorate the damn stall (it's just a table, how much can you do with it, especially when you're as broke as we are?) Finally, someone came up with the idea of using palm leaves, but uh...unless any of you know where we can get some free palm leaves, I doubt that's gonna work out. HEADACHE. Plus we've all got so much uni work to do! But we need that 100 bucks...anyone have any ideas?

We also talked about restructuring the committee, decided which posts we would create/remove and worked out a new committee structure which we hope will work well in the future...all you aspiring Mahatirs/Badawis, stay tuned la, we'll be keeping you guys up to date on when the elections are coming. Fingers crossed the Student Union hurries its ass up and just approves us already!

Okay, moving on: Recent Developments *tadah*

2. We are organizing paintball! Yes, on the first Saturday of Easter, 15th of April, come join MoMU as we trash Monash Caulfield on the paintball field! We're only gonna be charging $55, inclusive of equipment hire (mask, headgear, camo overalls, some high-tech thingy called a commando battle pack and latest semi-automatic gun which fires 7 rounds per second. Now all they need is to give us sniper guns too. CS!!! :p) , transport, lunch, drinks (the last time we went for paintball, they gave us lunch but no drinks...a bit the silly right...luckily for you all we care so much about you, bring free drinks summore ^^) . Now that's value for money. Me, Suvs, Erwin and August went on this same trip last year, minus drinks, for $65! With low tech guns summore. So that's why I never kena anything I aimed for. Hmmmm. In my opinion, this is probably the best paintball package you're gonna get out there, and places are limited, so QUICKKK. Come by our table with your $55 and register! Don't sit around in Melbourne this Easter when you could be out there fragging Monash :P

Disclaimer: Monash and Melbourne Uni's Malaysian Societies are on very friendly terms hor, don't get us wrong. But they started it! XD

3. I dunno if you've heard of them, but Envy Entertainment has the dubious honour of being our first proper sponsor! We have our own guest list over at Heist (corner Lonsdale and Queen St) so if you guys ever wanna go clubbing at a discount, please do support MoMU by supporting our sponsors. They have a weekly event at Heist every Friday, and you can get your discounted tickets every week through MoMU! Check out the e-flyer (which you've probably already had dumped into your mailbox if you live at Uropa/CS/Astorial :P)

You probably wouldn't believe it, but the girl in the picture is me. Honestly. I really look like that. It's just that when I go to uni I dress down so that other people not jealous. Really wan. Scout's honour.

Maybe you could get guestlist at Heist through your friends too, but think about it - every penny we earn, we use to organize more activities for you guys at cheaper prices. If you've been with our blog since the beginning (which wasn't too long ago...just scroll down :P) you'll know that we're pretty much bankrupt due to the fact we had to start over, and we can't get grants yet like other affiliated clubs can, so even though we're trying hard to do stuff cheap, it would be great to get support from you guys. Also, we get to show our sponsors that we're worth sponsoring :) If you're interested, just ask any one of us about guestlist or table bookings at our booth outside the Union House.

That's prolly about it for now. Other ideas are in the pipeline, but we need money to organize everything so DON'T FORGET to come support us in the Night Market! Cross your fingers guys, let's pray for some profit so we can all stop paying out of our own pockets and get more active ^^

MoMU booth at Union

Saturday, April 01, 2006

Hey all! *waves cheerily*

So apparently our MoMU booth at Union House was an awesome idea as dozens of you stopped by to sign up. *rubs hands in glee while admiring the expanding spam uh mailing list* Heheh thankew thankew to all who stopped by...twas a pleasure meeting all of you :D

For those who missed out on basking in the radiance of our glorious presence, fear not! For I have immortalised the moment by means of a snapshot.

twas a windswept day but we braved hurricanes and typhoons to set up a MoMU booth. such is our dedication. i say we deserve datukships.

Heheh we'll still be setting up stall at Union House next week, so for those who have yet to be spammed sign up, come look for us there la. We're the ones with the Jalur Gemilang berkibaring in the wind :D

Look forward to seeing you guys :)

Oh, and do be nice to the acting secretary by writing the emails neatly and clearly. For it breaks her tender little heart everytime the 'failure to send' sign shows up on her computer screen :(

yeah guys cmon join momu and support the malaysian club! it doesn't matter what race you are or even if you aren't from malaysia. the club is about promoting our culture, not excluding others :) but to be more specific, if there are any malays out there who are intimidated because we seem to be all chinese, come do something about it and join up ^^ we would love to see a more diverse mix of members and even in our committee (elections coming up in about a month if you didn't know). don't shy shy kay ppl? hope to see you guys at the table :D"
