Malaysians of Melbourne University MoMU: July 2006

Sejarah

Monday, July 31, 2006

Hiya =)

This started out as a reply to crushedguavas comment in the previous post but I reckon everyone wants to know a bit about how this club started out! Let me just give everyone here a brief history lesson:

Last semester, MCS (predecessor of MoMU, Malaysian Cultural Society) "gulung tikar" due to some paperwork problems with the union. Ashamed that there wasn't a Malaysian society in Melb Uni, Su Vyn and I walked around the Concrete Lawns during Clubs and Societies Day, collecting a sizable contact list of like-minded people. We then recruited friends, the elected incoming committee of MCS (I was elected as vice-sec btw) and like-minded enthusiastic M'sians and founded MoMU. At first we operated it as a free non-affiliated student society. Our first event was a huge fundraiser, selling roti john, teh tarik etc at the MUOSS Night Market. It was a huge success thanks to a rojak mix of overwhelming support, delicious food and the blood and sweat of the aptly named Team "Gerai MoMU".

the best team anyone could ask for

Since then, we have gone on to establish links and friendships with MASCA (http://www.mascavictoria.com/), MaSS Caulfield (http://masscaulfield.blogspot.com/) and MSA RMIT (http://msa-rmit.tripod.com/). We participated (and won! LOL) in the annual MASCA Victoria intervarsity games, got thrashed in paintball by MaSS and sang our hearts out with MSA at a joint Karaoke Night event. We have many events lined up for this semester, first of which is the FREE bbq next weekend (weather permitting) for our members. Will post something about that soon, so check your emails or visit the blog the next few days!

In a nutshell, MoMU was only approved by the student union this semester and even then we haven't had our constitution approved etc. We really REALLY would like to have our IGM (inagural general meeting) as soon as possible to get a proper committee elected. That said the current crop of people running the club are the founders who are ably supported by a number of wonderful volunteers. Rest assured once elected there will be the standard committee page filled with perasan-self-portraits and lame quotes.

Help is always welcome so if anyone would like to lend a hand, please send us an email at club_momu@yahoo.com.au. Swing by Union House anytime during lunchtime this week and look out for us beneath the Jalur Gemilang. Spread the word about the club and together we will make this the best club in the uni. After all we are from the best country in the world. =)

Before I forget, you do NOT have to be Malaysian to join! So there is no excuse not to join up! Meet us friendly and handsome/beautiful people and your life will be complete.

August

To Join Or Not To Join..

Saturday, July 29, 2006

Hello mortals, it is your treasurer speaking. I have to say that recently I went through a traumatic event due to the fact that I was deprived of $5.00 a few days ago by someone whom I shall not name.. Well, that’s only because I do not know the person’s name and I do not want to be liable for defamation. ;p

So what exactly happened? There we were sitting at the table when one of our fellow Malaysian came along the table. Let’s call this person A. So we were introducing the club to A and A was reaching for her purse when suddenly her friend, B passed her by. Now, B asked A what she was up to. Isn’t it kinda obvious? Joining the Malaysian Club! Anyway, A told B that she was joining the club when suddenly B pulled A away and said “Don’t join”. A and B disappeared away hand in hand. I have to ask, how rude is that? It’s alright if you do not want to join but do not pull people away just like that. I am rather ashamed and angered that some people have the nerve to do such a thing. What is your reason for not joining that you even have to pull others away?

If in your mind it is about money then I am sad that you cannot even take out $5 to support the Malaysian Society. If everyone were to have the same mentality, where would we be? There would not be any Malaysian Society on campus.. It’s not as if we take your money for fun. We need the funding to hold events for you guys.

Also, would you not feel embarrassed and ashamed if there were no Malaysian Society on campus? There are so many Malaysians around Melbourne University and no Malaysian Society? What would your friends from other universities say when they hear that Melbourne University has no Malaysian Society? Pathetic! And why is it that there is no such society in Melbourne University? Malaysian students in Melbourne University just do not support the Malaysian Society for it to first stabilise then grow strong.

You may also think that your one $5.00 would not be of much difference. But believe me it makes a great difference to the position of our club.

Anyway, enough on that.. Also I want to let you guys know that we have been sitting at the table the past week and we have recruited a number of members. Thanks guys for supporting us!! We do have plans to have a table at Union House during Week 2 as well.. If you still have not sign up and have plans to do so, come meet us in Union House. ;p

  • "Hi, nice idea using a blog as a webpage. I was a member of the former MCS (which none of my friend's joined) and the only thing I got back for my 10 dollars was free pearl from the Union Bubble Tea Shop. And I didn't even get to use it 21 times to get back my money. Not that I'm very calculating, I definitely wouldn't mind forking out 5 bucks to support the Malaysian Society, but sad to say, Malaysians in Melbourne aren't a close knitted group, apart from their own cliques, probably because of the fact that we have too many Malaysians in Melbourne. I'm comparing with Malaysian Societies elsewhere, for example Bristol where - because of its small number of Malaysian (and Singaporean) students - every Malaysian (and Singaporean) is everyone else's friend and everyone of them joins, which leads to a thriving community of Malaysian and Singaporean students. I just cannot see that happening here, for example, it would be difficult to get an average member to attend a particular event (e.g. Paintball, which is more fun with friends that you really know), just because none of their friends from their normal clique is a member and is interested in going as well.

Having written this, I've just decided that I WILL join this club, but I'm really hoping that we can achieve something more, like easy-to -attend events (instead of 55 dollars for Paintball or some Horse Riding thing that is far far away).

Also, a suggestion for your blog, perhaps have a link to a post introducing yourselves as a club and as a committee? Being a new reader, I was having trouble wondering who exactly you guys were. Sorry if there is already a link and I can't find it.

Ok that's it, sorry if I came off a bit, urm, impolite or rude."

Thanks for your support! I look forward to meeting u in person =)"

  • "Hey crushedguava,

Thanks for supporting us :D, yeah a couple of ppl have been having trouble finding relevant information on the blog so please bear with us while we sort the links and contents!

Not that I'm a commitee member, anyway.. regarding the post, I felt the same way you did by just reading it. Sigh, if Person A had really wanted to join, A wouldn't have changed his/her mind just because someone else told her not to join.

    As this phrase goes,
If he eat shit, you eat shit also ar?

Lol, that is just so Malaysianize, I never use that in real life!"

  • "Hi crushedguava.. You know, that was exactly what a few of us were talking about last year.. Due to the fact that there are so many Malaysians here in Melbourne, they tend to stick to themselves and thus they are not bothered to participate in any Uni events..

Yes they might say that they really enjoyed Uni because they go about things with all their friends, but then participating in events going on in Uni is something totally different. I say that from experience. It is great fun going out and meeting our other fellow students.

Anyway, I had been working all weekend regarding the links - committee, etc.. And it will be up soon enough :P

You just can't wait to see our faces eh? LOL Just kidding.. ;p Hope to see you guys around!"

  • "ehs...crush guava.. i noe hu u r... muahAHahhaha...u reiterated the stuff u told me here (esp de pearl bit..hee jk jk) >.<
but nevertheless, they are true, and very true indeed *hmmms*

not that i am a committee member (tumpang quote frm miszmilk), i'm sure if everyone (anyone) can bring up some good suggestions to spice up our club (regarding activities etc etc), all comments/suggestions are welcome!!! i guess it's everyone's effort (not just the committee members') to try to make this club a happening, strong and united club!

Hello kawan kawan!

Saturday, July 22, 2006

Yo!

Greetings all you wonderful people who have recently joined us, Malaysians of Melbourne Uni a.k.a. MoMU (it's cute I know). Sorry for the late official welcome post! I can almost see the confused looks on your faces as you scroll through all the pictures of food which you've left behind to study here. Mel is our president-to-be and regular blogger on this site. Cannot blame her lah cause she went back to KL and pigged out! *jabs at flab* Me (August), Su Vyn and Erwin went on a trip to Central Australia and had no access to internet for almost 2 weeks >.< Apologies if the posts seemed off topic but better to keep it fresh than let it rot rite? =)

Heres something I pulled out from the archives *brushes off dust* about how this club came to be :-
http://momumomu.blogspot.com/2006/03/hey-all-if-youre-visiting-this-blog.html

Anyway, MoMU is basically a new club, we just started up last semester and just recently got approved by the student union.

It's $5 per semester to join and you will get a membership card. As we are a new club, we are still looking for sponsors to grant member benefits. Rest assured that we will work hard on that. Serious one!!! For those who supported us last sem by joining our "contact list", fees will be slashed half price as promised. Your support throughout the semester was simply awesome and greatly appreciated and I cannot thank you guys enough!

Over the last sem, we've organised social activities like paintball trips, karaoke nights, sporting events and so on last sem. And many of these are done in collaboration with Malaysian student associations from other unis - so that we get to know people outside the tiny little community of Melb Uni ma. This sem we have a couple of things on the agenda such as our FIRST EVER annual ball, a BBQ for new members in week 2 and a Merdeka night amongst others!

And we try to keep our members informed about job opportunities back home in Malaysia. We do have companies sending us information about their recruitment drives and so on. MASCA (the umbrella body of all Malaysian student associations in Victoria) keeps us fairly well updated on matters pertaining to the latter as well.

So join MoMU la! Get to meet new people, and the committee is so nice and friendly and lengchai/lenglui summore.

Oh we'll be setting up a booth at the Union House EVERYDAY throughout the first week from 12 to 2 pm. Just look out for the hugeass Malaysian flag and that should be us =)

Cya soon!

August & Su Vyn

Because I like taking photos of food...

Saturday, July 08, 2006

You have to look at them. Whoever said I was a nice person?

Thank God I live near Hartamas - I never have to go hunting for supper.

They have a Madam Kwan's in Megamall now! It's next to Piccolo Mondo...if you squint, you can just about make out "Madam Kwan" in my horrible blurry picture:

Eh, I took it while walking ok. It's difficult taking pics of stuff when everyone around you is looking at you like you're a retard

Nasi Lemak. 12 smackers compared to 1 buck roadside pandan leaf nasi lemak, but oh so effing good.

Char Kuay Teow! Too much tauge if you ask me

And their Ipoh Hor Fun.

Everyone knows Chilli's don't they? Their burgers are the most ginormous things I've ever seen in my life. I dunno man. I can't decide whether Australian burgers are better than Malaysian ones. After all, we have Chillis and McD's double cheeseburgers. Plus, I'd take tepi jalan Ramly burger over souvlakis or kebabs anyday

Chilli's Mushroom Swiss!

The Molten Chocolate Cake. I get fat just looking at it. Come to think of it hor. There is no Molten Chocolate Cake equivalent in Melbourne either

"But enough of mamaks and Malaysian Western food!" you squeak.

So on to Chinese ciplak expensive restaurants! You know, those Fatty Crab type ones where you pay a bomb to eat in a normal coffeeshop type open-air place with cheapo plastic chairs and wooden folding tables.

It's so annoying how all the DVD sellers, lottery ticket men and random blind/deaf/(insert disability here) people come to sell you toys or flowers or other made in China stuff. It's not that I'm stingy or anything la...it's more like...if one comes, I don't mind donating. If two come, then ok, still can tahan. But by the third, fourth and fifth time, its like...I NEED TO EAT. And you really just can't give money to all of them. Even though sometimes I really want to.

Lala!

Delicious, scrumptious, awesome, yummy FISH HEAD CURRY!

Errr I dunno what this is called but I think it's some sort of Honey Chicken. It must be good because nobody wanted to wait for me to finish snapping the photo. Those pigs...their forks ruining my picture

Fried sotong rocks mah socks

See?? One of those DVD sellers I was talking about!

"Quick! Take picture!" my brother stagewhispers.
"Huh? Why?"
"Because its very funny! Illegal DVD seller wearing POLICE tshirt!" *snigger*

Ok. Very lazy to blog edi. It takes so darn long just to chuck in a few pictures. Have to rest before the finals start! Go France! *runs and hides from angry pizza men*

Back in KL

Sunday, July 02, 2006

Helloooo from sunny KL!

I don't know about everyone else, but Suvs, Erwin and August have deserted me to go to Central Aus *sob* But never mind! Because while they prance around in the desert fending off vulture attacks, I am back in KL surrounded by mamaks, cheap EVERYTHING and most importantly, Astro!

What is Singapore's favourite dish?
Chicken rice.
What is Malaysia's favourite dish?
Astro!
(lame-nya, I know. Blame my brother)

I'm not sure if most of you flew back for the hols, but I know poor souls like those mentioned above are stuck in Melbourne (during winter summore). Therefore, out of the goodness of my heart and kepohing purposes for those who didn't come home, I have taken the liberty of gloating showing off making you all jealous providing a FREE update service live and straight from the heart of Malaysia's capital! (nice anot me. *poke* say I'm nice *pokepoke*)

Hmmm. Where to start? Naturally World Cup fever is abounding. Damn layan man everywhere! Mamaks, Chinese steamboat restaurant, random warungs all also putting up projectors, big screens, cacat small TV sets. Every night aroud 9pm onwards you better not even THINK of driving out because there are jams in every major mamak district (Hartamas, Bangsar, KL) plus the only way you're gonna find parking is if you bring your koncos + parangs to pek yau people into giving up their parkings. Even then also maybe still cannot get.

Yup. Traffic. As usual.

Flags, flags, flags. Even the outside of OU is festooned with World Cup stuff. There's no escape!

Malaysia = food! Nuff said :P Aside from having the usual lunch and dinner (who needs to wake up in the morning during the hols anyway), going out to makan between matches/meals is seriously...making...me...fat. o.O So cheap summore!

Mwaha! Read on and drool in jealousy >:D

Oil never looked as good as it does on roti telur :D

Syokness! My kingdom for tandoori chicken

You know it's not Malaysia till you hear the lilting strains of "KOPI PENG SATU!!" emerging from the nearby mamak.

OKAY. LISTEN. When you go back to Malaysia at the end of the year.
If you live in KL.
GO TO BAKERZIN. ORDER THEIR PROFITEROLES.
It's three scoops of ice cream in giant profiteroles!
Compared to tinny Safeway custard ones! To heck with your diet ok.
Have you ever seen anything more heavenly?! *faints*

Yao Tuck Teng in Taman Tun...

...and my Pork Ball Noodles :)

Errr what else...omg. I made myself hungry. There's a new Proton! Yup, our 12 year old Satria has a new successor, the Satria Neo (which looks like a Savvy, if y'ask me, but apparently it kinda was modelled after the Gen-2). Check it out here.

Alritey, that's all for now. Tak de stim lagi. Will be back after I take more pics! Am going to collect my MyKad and change over my drivers license tomorrow.

I'm not a P driver anymoreeee! Wheeee!

But the P will stay on my car cos my brother is still on his. Celakaaaaa.

Tahz! Hope everyone's enjoying their hols!
